Collaring Elephants in Low-Resource Settings: A Training Manual

This 89-page manual was written to support elephant conservation efforts by the Directorate of Wildlife, Ministry of Water and Forest (MINEF), and the Ivorian Office of Parks and Reserves (OIPR), Republic of Côte d’Ivoire. Although some of the material presented is specific to Côte d’Ivoire or to equipment currently used in the field by Ivorian teams, much of the information can be modified and applied to working in other countries.

Most of the material presented in the manual is based on twenty-five years of experience in placing satellite tracking collars in low-resource settings in Central and West Africa. Low-resource in this context refers to working in remote areas, mostly on foot, without vehicles, fixed-wing aircraft, or helicopter support during elephant collaring operations.
